When Angel went to collect Aiden from town, he held a tray of vanilla raspberry muffins for everyone. Her favorite. He was bringing out the big guns to apologize for being an ass. He needed to do better than that, she thought, as she sat down at her desk where she found a note.

She folded it up and placed it in her pocket book, trying in vain not to let it affect her and failing. Yours. If only he was hers.

A knock at the office door interrupted her. “Come in.”

“Hiya, Mama. Daddy wants to take us out so we can show him how the town’s changed. Would it be okay if we took your car?” Addy’s eyes had something shifty behind them. She was up to something.

“Yeah, I suppose. Is Sonny okay with that?”

“I told him he has to come. He’s almost finished the paint job on the Charger, anyways.”

“Mm. Okay. Don’t let him scratch my baby.”

“I will do the appropriate amount of backseat drivin’, don’t you worry.” Addy flashed her pearlers, as she grabbed the keys, and ducked back out the door.

Aiden didn’t make it back until closing time, telling her he’d dropped the kids off at home already. He looked sweaty and a bit muddied up. Alarm bells were clanging behind her eardrums.

“Did y’all go hikin’ or somethin’?”

“Naw, we played a little ball at the park.”

“Oh. Okay. Good, I’m glad they’re havin’ fun.” She truly was. Guilt always gnawed at her every time they had holidays and she couldn’t take them out. They actually enjoyed their time at the shop, but she didn’t want them working their butts off. It was so strange to have someone else to share the parenting job with. She couldn’t entirely relax, but she enjoyed the brief reprieve from all the responsibility, even for a short while. Maybe his timing wasn’t all bad.

When she made it home, the note ended up in her drawer beside the bed so she could read it again ... and again.
